Rats do not rank high on the wildlife food chain. Yet, their numbers continue to grow and they constantly prove their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. This can be partially attributed to their ability to squeeze through small holes. Holes that are too small for predators to follow in after them. Their flexibility and intelligence makes them experts in locating cavities around homes and buildings. Here are 5 common entry points of rats.

  1. Foundation Vents- Crawlspaces are equipped with vents to allow the underside of a home to breath. Crawlspace vents deteriorate over time and rats take advantage of them to gain entrance into homes.
  2. Ridge Vents- Roofs and attics require ventilation to remove heat and vapor. Ridge vents are long cuts at the peaks of roofs that allow for exhaust ventilation. They are protected by a ridge cap. Rats have the ability to slip under ridge caps and enter attic spaces.
  3. Gable Vents- Gable vents serve the same purpose as ridge vents. They are typically installed at either side of a building and allow for cross ventilation. Gable vents are usually plastic, wood or aluminum. They are a familiar favorite for rat entry.
  4. Construction Gaps- Over time junctions in trim boards and roof wall intersections begin to swell and separate. Rats can squeeze into those junctions.
  5. Plumbing Stacks- Vents utilized to exhaust plumbing systems protrude through roofs and are usually sealed with a rubber boot. A quick nibble for a rat.
