While more areas of North America are being converted to residential and commercial spaces wildlife finds itself living closer to humans and their homes. It’s common for almost all homeowners to see some variety of wildlife in their yard at some point. Although wildlife can be viewed on homeowners property it does not mean they are living there. What are transient critters and what are resident critters?

Critters are creature of habit. They are in constant search of food, water and secure shelter. While traveling to find those resources they establish a route of travel. In some cases their travel path goes through homeowners backyards and driveways. Critters that are traveling through a property but not denning/residing on site are known as “transient critters”.

Critters that are living on or in a homeowners property are known as “resident critters”. These critters are not only traveling through the yard or driveway but have established shelter on site. Common denning areas include under porches, attics, crawlspaces, trees and chimneys to name a few. Resident critters have established their home close by or inside a house.

It’s important to note that transient critters can become resident critters. If homeowners have food, water or cavities around their property that allows for shelter transient critters may decide to live on site. If critters are consistently fed on site, through loose trash or bird feeders they may decide to live close to their food source. If homes have missing chimney caps or other cavities around their exterior critters may decided to take advantage of those areas for shelter. To keep transient critters as passerby’s and not residents a homes exterior should be kept tight and loose food/water should not be left around.
