Dealing with a depredating raccoon on a property can require a multi faceted approach. Raccoons are dextrous critters fitted with five digits on their paws. Their paws can be a source of damage when they decide to make a house their home. From making a mess of trash cans to tearing holes in roofs or even snatching meals from a stocked koi pond there are valid reasons for wanting to keep these critters at a safe distance from a residence.
Like most critters raccoons are creatures of habit and are aware of their surroundings; including changes to their surroundings.
One method of deterring raccoons from frequenting a property involves removing or excluding the item the raccoons are targeting from the equation. An example of this would be bringing in bird feeders at night. Removing plates of food left out for stray animals especially in the evening. Bringing in or locking trash cans overnight. When critters are targeting gardens or koi ponds fencing and lighting can be added to dissuade critter activity. In some cases we’ve observed that simply removing the enticement from a raccoons path or modifying the habitat around a home can result in self eviction.
There are many approaches to dealing with raccoons on a property. Live traps do not always work. Raccoon projects should be approached with the mindset that different tactics may need to be implemented for their eviction; in some cases changing what’s familiar to them on their path can accomplish that goal. No single method is effective for every situation.
