When it comes to wildlife most critters and rodents are territorial. From food to shelter there are constant struggles for resources. Some homeowners believe there are both raccoons and squirrels in their attic. Could these two critters cohabit the same attic space?

The general rule of thumb is no. In the attic space critters will set up their dens/nests and protect them feverishly especially when offspring are present. For example, squirrels are not a staple in a raccoons diet. However, raccoons are a prime example of omnivores and will eat almost anything. A squirrel could not comfortably establish a nest in an attic where raccoon/s also lived. The same principle applies for burrows near the foundation of homes. It would be unsafe for groundhogs to rear offspring in a hole that a skunk was occupying.

When critters establish a home they are seeking protection and safety. Many attic invaders are mammals. Mammals have an innate characteristic of protecting their young. For that reason when evicting an attic of critters we are not generally dealing with squirrels and raccoons.
