Whining and crying coming from the walls of a home can leave many homeowners scratching their heads.

Most raccoons have April and May birthdays. Baby raccoons or kit are born in some interesting places. When spring arrives and odd noises emanate from homeowners walls raccoons may be the source. What do raccoon mothers search for in finding a delivery room and why are wall cavities a popular choice?

Female raccoons or sow raise their offspring with no assistance from the male/boar. The boar are commonly known to partake in infanticide (killing of an infant) even if the infants are their own. Female raccoons are innately wired to find dark, quiet, hard to reach areas to protect the kit. Female raccoons become creative in this mission.

Wall cavities are a familiar favorite for sow to birth and raise their kit. Wall cavities are dark, quiet, insulated and definitely hard to reach. From the attic space there are generally access points to the walls of a home. Raccoons are extremely dexterous and have little issue shimming up and down the wall cavities. They will create a comfortable den in the void and birth/raise their young. When mom goes off to find food the young can be heard chatting and crying in the walls.

Female raccoons are very protective of their young, it’s a common trait in mammals. In their efforts to protect their young they target secluded areas in homes. While attics and spaces under decks are popular options, wall cavities are also a favorite.

Many homeowners who have raccoon babies in their walls want to keep the family together. In almost every case the offspring can be removed from the walls and reunited with their mothers.
