Critters are innately drawn to natural dens. Natural dens include hollows of trees, caves, well dug-out earthen burrows and other naturally occurring cavities. Although attics are not naturally occurring they do hold similar traits to natural dens. Here are three similar characteristics between attics and naturally occurring dens.

  1. Solitude- There are many homeowners who have never seen the inside of their attics. Attics provide a place with little to no disturbance from visitors.
  2. A Roof Overhead- Both attics and natural dens provide shelter from the elements.
  3. Dark & Cozy- Attics are usually never lit with electricity and remain in a state of relative darkness. Attics are typically empty less insulation which can be used to create comfortable nests.

When naturally occurring dens are destroyed from natural disasters, construction, development, etc critters will look for alternative shelters. Attics are attractive options for wildlife shelter. The three characteristics above allow critters to rest and relax. They also provide a relatively safe and dry place for wildlife to birth and raise young. To prevent critters from infesting an attic space exclusions should be the focus.

Exclusions simply exclude critters access to attic spaces. Exclusions range from repairing and reinforcing attic vents to sealing gaps around a homes exterior that allow access to the attic. For more information contact the wildlife professionals at Critter Evictors!
