There are multiple theories on the functionality of a raccoons mask. Raccoons are easily identified by the “masks” around their eyes. While this distinctive feature lends to the raccoons nickname, masked bandits, their markings may hold functionality as well. What purpose does a raccoons mask potentially serve in its daily life?
The first theory relates to sports. Athletes from the NFL to the MLB can be seen with black grease or strips under their eyes. The black color is there to mitigate glare and increase visibility. It’s theorized that raccoon masks play a similar role.
Raccoons are predominately nocturnal. Most homeowners state they hear/see them active after the sun goes down. Raccoons have exceptional vision at night. Their dark masks may play a role in reducing glare and increasing visibility. Another theory relates the raccoons mask to aposematic warnings.
Aposematic (of coloration or markings) notify and alert others of a potential threat. Skunks are commonly referenced when speaking to aposematic warnings. Their distinct black and white colors easily identify them to humans and other critters (even if they don’t see in color) as a potential threat. Facial masks in themselves are known to function as a form of aposematic warnings. Facial masks give the message of potential danger through aggressive defense.
There are several working theories on the functionality of a raccoons mask. Raccoon masks may aid in visibility and warn others of their ability to defend themselves. One things for sure; when raccoons crisscross paths with humans they are easily recognized by their well known masks. For more information contact the wildlife professionals at Critter Evictors!
