You’ve heard footsteps overhead, seen a raccoon on the roof or in some cases your neighbor has called to inform you they saw a raccoon exit your chimney. How are these masked bandits accessing your home?

It may come as a surprise but raccoons are extremely dextrous thanks to their anatomy and strong memory. Raccoons have five digits on their paws. These digits are finely tuned to the point that raccoons have been witnessed opening doors, twisting lids off containers and lifting screens to enter windows. Raccoons take full advantage of their abilities when it comes to scaling homes and buildings.

In a lot of cases raccoons will scale up the sides of downspouts, the corners of a building, the bricks of a chimney or balance between electrical wires to access a roof line. If you’re looking around your property to find their access point keep in mind raccoons do not have the cleanest paws. There will often be smudges and prints left behind of where these nimble critters are accessing your property. For more information or additional help contact Critter Evictors!
